Here is a case in which a circumzenithal arc can occur. In the present case, a big cloud, a cumulonimbus, mask the Sun. The top o fthe cloud touch the troposphere and generate a kind of thin cloudy layer. In this cirrus-like cloud, the ice cristals diffract the sunlight.
So, a circumzenithal arc, visible in the upper part of the picture, appear. It remained visible a few minutes, till the thin clouds shift. |
