Prima facie, it's a picture of a normal rainbow. But examine it more attentively and you'll see a kind of short and pale vertical spur hanged at the secondary rainbow. The colors of this light apparition are inversed regarding those of the secondary rainbow. So, it's the primary rainbow! But the primary rainbow is already visible on the right of the picutre. Then, what is it?
In fact, it's a reflection rainbow. This can occur when the sunlight reflect on a lake or any water surface, if the surface is smooth enough. Then a virtual Sun located under the horizon is seen by the rain droplets. Those one diffract the light of this second Sun, with the display of another fainter rainbow located higher than the "normal" rainbow.
Here, it's the Odet River which is playing the role of a mirror, reflecting the Sun. |
